Looking for local vendor for substrate

I'm thinking about starting a planted tank (my background is in saltwater tanks) and am having a hard time finding affordable substrate. I've been to Aquascapes and Petland. Does anyone else on Oahu carry planted tank substrates?

Also, can you recommend any other forums that have more Hawaii folks?

I found a couple at Pets Plus this week. One by Azoo that is comparable to ADA AS and one from Pondcare.

If I use sand, how do I get the nutrients into it?

root tabs.

or if you're using plants that draw from the water column, you just dose there (liquid or dry ferts).

if you're buying sand go to mr sandman in mapunapuna. don't pay stupid prices at the local stores.

the AZOO soil is amazing... I am doing a test between the ADA and the AZOO soil and I am in love with it... I think that it is far Superior to ADA in the sense that it is not cloudy it actually looks like it is polishing the water. almost as if I was running purigen in the filter. you can get it at Monaloua Pets as well across the street from the stadium

i was just curious as to why you don't want to use the ADA substrate for your tanks?

Pets Plus carries the Azoo as well. I have heard that it doesn't leach ammonia into the water which is great. I ended up using ADA Aquasoil. It didn't cloud my water but it smells terrible.

If I hadn't gotten some ADA AS in the package deal I bought, I think I would have gone AZOO, too, because it's only $40 a bag compared to $70 (I think?) for ADA AS from Aquascapes.

It shouldn't have a bad smell, smells like... dirt to me.

It smells like dirt to my husband, too. He actually likes the smell. I hated it for the first two weeks, then the smell subsided quite a bit.

You can smell it when it's underwater? You must have a super nose!

I wish it would have stayed under the water!

It made the water smell like AS. I posted on the noob forums and was assured that it was just the ammonia leaching out and that it would go away eventually. Adding Purigen helped a lot, as did daily water changes for a week.
