On the return lip coming out of the AquaClear, there is a small lip protruding, that is supposed to deflect the water flow and cause it to ripple across the surface. If you cut this lip off, the water will fall straight down.
If you don't want to cut the plastic, you could attach a piece of sponge to the lip that would diffuse the water flow, and reduce surface agitation significantly.
