Barclaya longifolia

Hi All,

I have kept the subject species for a few years now in my 75 gallon and from time to time have had reproduction via a bulblet forming around the first Barclaya. Currently I have three plants but I am thinking that is going to change soon. Today I spotted three (3) flowers in various stages of formation; I am going to try to 'harvest' the seed and avoid the plantlets sprouting throughout the tank.

75 gallon, CO2, Fluval LED & 2X 55 watt AH Supply power compact, EI fertilization

Beautiful! How does the plant fare seasonally? Have you experienced prolonged periods of dormancy?

Congratulations on the success!

Hi @varanidguy,

Yes, the first year the plant died completely back with not a trace. Several months later not only did the plant re-sprout but there was a bulblet next to it as well. I don't recall a dormant period in the last 12 months or so but as the House of Stark motto in GOT "Winter Is Coming" and who knows what will happen next month?

Mine does the same, throwing out flowers on a regular basis.

I also cull them, as I have heard if they bloom and drop seeds it can be quite a mess.

So you going to try and cultivate them in a different tank? If so, should be interesting.

Hi @Greggz,

I have a low tech 10 or a high tech 20 to try to grow the seeds in, maybe split them up and see how they do.
