Water lettuce melting/ holes

Hey guys, so I have had a continuous brown alage problem for a while now and so I decided to experiment with some floating plants to see if they could compete for nutrients with the alage before it coats my plants below. The idea is that once the plants below are established, I'll be able to remove all the water lettuce.

So a problem I've having though is that the water lettuce is kind of melting and I'm kit sure why. The root systems are growing crazy fast, but the leaves are somewhat falling apart on some leaves. Does any one have any idea what may cause this?

It looks like something is eating the leaves...I may be mistaken but some leaves look like they have chunks taken out of them...if you have snails in the tank, those could be the culprits sadly :/ sorry if this isn't helpful for you.
