crushed slate

i had a couple of thick slate tiles that were drilled to sink driftwood that i'm not using anymore... i dropped one in my garage and it shattered and flaked, making me wonder... is there any reason not to smash my remaining slate and use it as a top layer over profile? in fact, if it's cool to use it, then i might swing by the stone store and grab some reddish or other contrasting color to mix in. I'm hoping for something that resembles the substrate in Urkevitz's nano tank.

slate leaves VERY sharp edges (pre-historic man used them for simple knives)...which means any bottom dwellers could easily be cut up (loaches, catfish, cory's, etc).

I wouldn't risk it if it were my tank.

I would agree with Malkore, it may be too sharp for some bottom dwellers.

The stuff in my tanks are from a river. The edges are smoothed out from wave action.

Haha, maybe that would give me an excuse to dig the rock tumbler out of the closet.
