I have a leak! Reusing old sand?

So my 55 is leaking, so over the weekend I'm gonna reseal it with silicone. Im going to try and reuse as much substrate thats in the tank(which is pfs and eco complete). The question is if I don't have enough sand can i use some that has been in a bag outside for a while and rinse it off to get rid of possible bugs or other gunk. Or just buy some more. Im trying not to spend a fortune as im only in highschool and dont make money. Please help! I don't want to just tear the tank down and sell it.

I would say it's a risk vs reward moment. If you can clean it and make sure it has nothing in it that can harm your tank go for it.
If you think it may be contaminated I would get new substrate.

Depends on what it has been exposed to.
If it has just been sitting there, open to the air it may have been rained on, it may have some dust or even be growing some moss or garden weeds. Not a problem, rinse and use.
If you suspect it has been in the path of someone spraying for weeds or pests I would not use it.

I use substrate that has been stored like that. Not a problem. I do rinse it, but I do not go to any extreme. Sand does not hold nutrients (like decaying bug poop), so enough rinsing to get rid of the dust is all it needs.

I would worry about fixing your tank before you decide what to do with your substrate!
