Reusing black (blasting?) sand as "filler" substrate?

I want to scape my new tank with some fairly high bermed areas and "planting beds" behind walls of stone. I don't want to use straight Aqua Solum, as that will get pricey. I also don't think I want to wait for my Flourite Black to arrive, and would like to use that in the foreground, anyway. So... I have some black sand that I think is blasting sand that I received from someone. It's quite fine. I successfully grew some stuff in it with root tabs a while back. It's been out-of-commission since our move. Would this be okay to use in the lower layers in these built-up areas behind the stones? I would use a couple inches of Aqua Solum over it.

I wouldn't use sand as a build up, it will compact quite a bit. Instead try crushed lava rock or matten foam

Thank you! I was kind of worried about that -- I'll see if I can get some lava rock at the hardware store. :-)
