Question Substrate Question

I have adopted a 55 Gallon freshwater tank from a local Doctors office about a month ago. With the purchase they included all the fish (Guppies, Rasbora, Rainbow, etc), the tank tear down, shipping and set-up in my home office. Unfortunately they used a frosted black aquarium gravel and root tabs for some of the existing plants. At the time I really wasn't sure if I wanted a planted tank but after some research, moving forward it's my only option to achieve the look I'm going for.

Is there a way to add/mix in a finer substrate into this gravel? I just need to add a finer substrate for my more delicate foreground plants.

Or should I remove it and start again?

The substrate material you now have looks good to me. You don't need anything finer to grow any plant. What you do need is to evaluate your lighting, so you can decide how to properly fertilize the tank, provide the source of carbon the plants need (CO2 or Excel). What lighting do you have?

You can definitely mix in sand without much issue. After rinsing some aquarium sand, just lower the moist sand in via a container, reach the bottom, tilt, mix into gravel.

I have a Satellite+ Pro LED light.

I have been using 5.5ml of liquid carbon before the light comes on in the morning and a weekly fertilizer.

I have also been doing 25% weekly water changes with the Python (I love that thing)!

I'm now rolling with Flourite. Plants are loving it.
