Question Starting a 55 gal planted

Im going to buy a 55gal tank. I want to know what the best way to start the tank. What substrate to use? Should I mix between two different kinds of substrates?

Hello! I just started my 55 gallon I'm no expert so I'm sure some will chime in, I have found some great FAQs around here about different substrates and alternatives. Best of luck to you!

Considering what a PITA changing out substrate is, be sure you get what you want the first time

I'm a big fan of black diamond blasting sand. My only other consideration would be soil with a sand cap, preferably BDBS again. Low light, low tech, tanks with dirt really grow well but I usually advise against it for new comers because of the trouble soil gives when replanting and such.

Hello Cons...

You don't need to use anything fancy. Fancy just makes tank keeping complicated. I started a 55 G with standard pea-sized polished gravel from the pet store. It's inexpensive and works well for planting and is easy to clean, so you can maintain healthy water conditions. Keep it simple and you'll be successful.
