Controsoil, pH and CO2
I have two tanks using only Controsoil as the substrate. One is a 29 gallon planted tank with three otos and the other is a 58 gallon planted with no fish yet.
My tap water is pH 7.4, kH about 7, GH something over 10. My water in the tanks with Controsoil is now about pH 6.7. When the pressurized CO2 is on, the pH drops to 6.2. I don't have a pH controller - I just run the CO2 for about 8 hrs a day when the lights are on.
I never realized the pH had dropped so much due to the Controsoil till I measured it. In addition, my pressurized CO2 system on both tanks takes the pH further down to 6.2, which really surprised me. I never used ADA Aquasoil or any of these types of "shrimp" substrates before and don't intend to add any shrimp to the tanks - I want to use Controsoil specifically for growing my plants.
Is this low pH in my tanks going to be a problem for either growing plants or keeping fish? I'll probably just have some otos and maybe some dwarf plecos to keep the manzanita clean.
