Sand smells strange

I bought a 50lb bag of basalt sand from home depot to put in a 29. I was rinsing it today and noticed that if I picked up a handful of wet sand it smells fishy, like I just came back from fishing kind of fishy. Is this a problem? The water didn't come perfectly clear, it was really dark and nasty at fist then got to a cloudy but not dark color.

There might be some bacteria growing in basalt sand because of the minerals it contains and you might be smelling their metabolised products - fishy or sulphurous. These are free-living bacteria and will not cause disease.

If you have a choice, you have a problem, till you elect your choice. No choice, no problem, only consequences, learn to live with them.

That's good too know. Thanks. I was kind of concerned about it. I wasn't sure if maybe there was salt or something in it yet.
