How long do the built in fertilizers and trace elements in Eco-complete last before requiring additional fertilizers?

Each case will be different. All substrates with enough time will go inert and lose its nutritional value. Fertilizers are dirt cheap and shouldn't be a concern.

Everyone seems to be saying eco=complete is actually inert from the getco, and that the nutrients that are "inside" the grains are not accessible to the plants. Right now I have root tabs under the ecocomplete.

one way to find out is to look at the plants and check for root growth above the substrate in water. This could mean that you have more nutrients in water than substrate. except for floaters.
