Substrate Aeration

Hello--

I have a dirted tank and i want to get some oxygenated water down into the soil. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions.

I am concerned that there might me a lack of oxygen in my soil which could cause rapid nitrogen reduction and causing my plants to degrade

thank

If you have planned plants considered "heavy root feeders" then you shouldn't have to worry about it. These plants include Echinodorus sp, Cryptocoryne sp, Valisneria sp, Sagitaria sp and, some Hygrophila sp. But, even stem plants pull some oxygen down to their roots. Also, you can utilize MTS(Malaysian trumpet snails) for light aeration. They will dig through the top inch or so of substrate. If your substrate cap isn't too deep you really won't have to worry so much either.

Heavy root feeders will help; but only once those plants are established. If you're concerned grab something and start poking around in the substrate. You'll likely hit a few big pockets of gas some of which could merely be carbon dioxide but some could be methane and other nasty stuff that can develop down there. I've used chopsticks and/or a big pair of tweezers. Anything to just stab at the substrate should be fine.
