Deep substrate - Just eco-complete, or something underneath?

If I plan to have a portion of the scape raised with several inches of eco complete...should I have something coarser like gravel underneath? I know there's some debate about substrate becoming anaerobic with deep substrate... I'm wondering how people get around a layer that's 5 inches+

I've seen people use al kinds of material to make a high scape. Plastic grating, stones etc.

You dont have to use more soil to get high soil
