sand "cap," substrate depth

Hi there,

I just put down my substrate -- FloraMax (only decent thing they had two bags of at PetSmart) "capped" with National Geographic white sand. The sand cap ranges from 1 to 2 inches on top of about 2 inches of FloraMax. Do those depths sound right? I expect some of the sand will slowly filter down into the FloraMax. I've read about "anaerobic pockets," which sounds ominous, so I don't want to create a high risk of that... if it is indeed a bad thing.

Also, I put the sand cap down for my corydoras, but I suspect manypeople who do that have a plant-based reason for it... what benefits does it have? Just making it easier to hold down roots? Or something else?

Anerobic pockets are a bad thing. You didn't need to cap Floramax unless you didn't like the color. The sand will eventually settle on the bottom and the Floramax will work its way to the top.

4" of substrate should be just fine, and you probably won't have anerobic pockets since you're using the 2 types in a layered fashion.

Most people only "cap" if they are using dirt, or they want to accomplish something specific. Floramax works great on it's own, but so does sand.

Good, thanks. As I said, the sand was for the corydoras (and the look of the tank); hopefully there's enough there that some will stay on top.
