top soil... what was found in yours?

Im in the process of mineralizing the topsoil, and when i was getting up and close with it, i found the top soil to have lots of twigs, leafs and woods chips. just wondering if this is a normal mixture for top soil. looks like a lot of this will come out when i sift it.

Same thing in mine that I have going, no worries that is why we sift. I would only worry if you start finding human bones or something.

Rocks, small pieces of wood, pieces of plastic, small pieces of metal, and other assorted junk. This was from several bags of organic topsoil from Walmart.

'Topsoil' is whatever the manufacturer want to label as topsoil, and might have almost anything in it.

+1, I've had "topsoil" be many different things over the years:

- mostly sand with a little bit of some kind of blackish compost added to make it dark.
- brown dirt with large quantities of broken glass and ceramic tile fragments in it.
- a stinky sulfurous peaty goop.
- a mixture of "dirt" with quite a lot of compost in it, and golf-ball sized clay lumps

A mix containing leaves, twigs and wood chips probably was mixed with compost that didn't break down well enough.. It's certainly common to find some of these in topsoil, and I've had batches with lots of it, but not often.

That's what topsoil is, whatever.

"Topsoil is the upper, outermost layer of soil, usually the top 2 inches (5.1 cm) to 8 inches (20 cm). It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the Earth's biological soil activity occurs. It also houses many organisms."

No, TPT's forum doesn't really have the concept of closing a thread, unless an admin locks it out...
