Coarser/pebble substrate over dirt?

Would this work? My 50g is thriving with black diamond cap over MGOCPM, but I have a bug up my butt to do a 20g low-tech pea puffer tank in the near future. I'd love something with a different look from my heavily planted, jungle-like tank with dark substrate...something maybe lighter-colored, small pebbles.

Deep Blue Professional 50g
Current USA Satellite+ Pro LEDs (24 & 36")
Fluval 406 filter
CO2Art Advance Professional Aquarium CO2 Dual Stage
Hydor Koralia Circ Pump - 425gph x2
DBP 20g long - low tech

New Substrate

Hello Zoom...

Polished, pea-sized gravel. By polished, I mean non abrasive. Inexpensive and colorful. I use it in all my tanks.
