Adding cichlid substrate to a dirt tank

My tap water is 4 GH, and in Walstad's book she recommends a GH over 5. I have some Caribsea African cichlid substrate I was going to use in another project but I changed my mind, so couldn't I add some to the cap or the potting mix to take care of that, and add calcium for the plants?

So the more I put in, the higher the the GH will be? Would there be a high limit not to cross for growing plants like Crypts, Swords, Dwarf Sag, and some floating Crystalwort?

Thanks for any information given.

Wouldn't you like to beside the seaside?
