50/50 or 100%

I am picking up 3M Colorquartz Black T Grade on Wednesday.

I want that black look.

Should I mix it 50/50 with used SMS or just get 100% of the Colorquartz?

If you want the black look then 100% T-Grade or it's going to look muddy.

If it's a big enough tank then you could still use SMS to save money but you'll have to layer it. T-Grade along the edge with SMS in the middle as filler with a layer of T-Grage on top of that but the T-Grade might blend a bit over time (I haven't used it myself).

Personally, I'd mix it for the nutrient content.

Unless you really mind the look of the 2 mixed.

You could mix a little in a clear glass or jar first to see if it's something you can live with or not.

This is what CQ and Onyx sand mixed looks like (which I think is similar in color to the grey SMS):

Except both of those substrates are inert fired clay substrates so the only thing you will get from them in any real quantity is iron.

I think im going to go all black colorquartz..

I just painted the back of the tank black, made custom pvc spray bar and painted it black, I think the black substrate will really set off the plants...

SMS will end up at the surface, I'd stick with colorquartz.

Im picking up 2 bags of Colorquartz today.

Hopefully 100 pounds will cover a 75 gallon tank.

Yes that will be adequate. 30-40 pounds is enough for a thin layer, which I had before adding plants.
