Switching substrate

I have a community tank that I want to switch into a planted tank. But I don't know if I should go with dirt or something like flora max. If I were to use dirt how could I do it? Since dirt needs a time to become "fish friendly". And don't have any other place where I could place the fish.
If I use flora max how many 11lbs bags would I need for a 75gal tank?

Thank you

If your filter is mature you should be able to swap your substrate with minimal loss of livestock if any. A large plant mass and big water changes up front help as well.

I use floramax on top of dirt. 7 bags did the trick on my 75 gallon though I could have gotten away with 6. It's definitely not a dirt OR floramax situation though. They need to both be used together. Same goes for fluorite or Eco complete. These substrates are going to contain some mineral content but are otherwise inert with zero NPK available. That's what the dirt is for. If used alone, without any dirt, root tabs, or fert dosing regiment, your plants will starve

If you want to use dirt, I would do the mineralized top soil method of pre-treating it, for significantly less ammonia production.
