While My 16gal. Gently Weeps
Although the double dose of Excel I've been administering for the last three days seems to have had an effect diametrically opposed to the one I was anticipating/hoping for on the BBA and/or Staghorn which now rules my sad 16gal bow front, I am now focusing my attention on putting in a substrate for my new (26gal.) tank. Since I swore off AquaSoil after my last experience with it, I decided to go with Black Flourite on top of a laterite/Flourite Red/ peat base. So, I go to the LFS and ask if they happen to have any peat- the reputedly knowledgeable staff member (quite possibly the store owner) said they usually do, but they're out, and he'll get some in by Tuesday. Well, I went by there today and bought one of the two boxes (guess that should have rung an alarm bell) he bought for his stock. Because he had gone to the trouble of getting this stuff specially for me, I purchased it without an inspection- or I would have noticed that it was an EHEIM product! This stuff is called "Ehiem Torf pellets" and the English part of the label calls it "Filter peat." I can't find anything about it on Eheim's website, but I'm pretty sure it's just a concocted "natural" filter media that doesn't belong in my new substrate.
If anyone knows anything about this stuff, I'd be curious to know more about it, but I imagine I'll still be returning it to the store. Guess I need to find a garden center...
