A 29 gallon tank has a 30" x 12" footprint. So, that is 360 square inches or 2320 square cm. Each inch of depth of substrate is 2.54 cm, so for an inch of substrate you need 5900 cubic cm, which is 5.9 liters. For 2 inches, that s 11.8 liters. Etc.

I used 14-15 lit of substrate total in my 18 gallon. it really depends how you want to scape your aquarium, one of mine have a very big slope so that requires alot of soil to make the hill
