Resetting all tanks

Title says it all. At the moment I have pond potting soil in the tanks under a layer of crushed quartz. I am a little tired of dealing with the quartz and was wondering if I could use Flourite on top of the soil and how thick I can have the soil. Or would you all recommend something else. Its a pain to clean with the quartz because my python sucks the quarts up.

I used flourite over soil in a tank this year (2 1/2 months wet). Did 1 1/2 - 2" of Miracle Grow Organic Choice Potting Soil followed by about 1" Original Flourite. In the third month (last week) I did clean the sub by vacuuming for the first time only to remove some soil left by gas eruptions. Other than that water changes based on PO4 readings only. Based on D. Walstads book I'm leaving the tank to do its thing.

So far so good Low light low tech.
