2 kinds of FlouraMax?

I went to my local big box and they had 2 bags of FlouraMax that said on the bag "Will not raise pH" and 2 that said "not for use with discus - may raise pH' (or something to that nature)

Are there 2 kinds or did they get pinched for making bogus claims and have to remove the "former"???

40 breeder - 1.25" Dirt/1.25" Black Diamond cap - Pressurized CO2 (2.25bps) - 2x54watt T5HO and 42watt LED (total 150watts; 14,500 lumens) - EI dosing - 50% weekly WC - H.O.T. Magnum 250 canister - SunSun 530 gph pump - Set-up 7-14-2015 - Cycled 8-1-2015

I know theres at least 2 types and i think there made with different products ones like volcanic rock and the other is something else. But smart(if thats what your talking about) only normally carries one type.

Were you looking at Midnight/Volcano vs. original?

Midnight & Volcano Red are lava rock, while original is a montmorillonite clay based product. Original comes in 15lb bag, Midnight/Volcano Red comes in 12lb bags. The volcanic based substrates shouldn't raise PH, and the montmorillonite clay will mess with PH until it reached equilibrium over time.

No, I was looking at the black/red, NOT the origional.

I looked at their website and there is no image or mention of the one I saw in the store, nor is there any mention of different colors being made of different materials.
It stated in a yellow box at the bottom "May raise PH - not for use with discus"

Next time you're there take a photo of the product.

I've bought several bags and they all look like the referenced product image.

There was a yellow sticker on the bag covering the "Will not raise Ph"
I don't know who put it there, CaribSea, PetSmart, or some unsatisfied customer that did it on his own.

I love a good mystery, and will be contacting all parties for an explanation. More to follow.

I did some research and found many forum queries (from 2011 to 2014) of "Why is my pH rising, and invariably the poster stated they used FloraMax. One poster found foreign looking pieces that "violently fizzed in vinegar". Apparently it was contaminated, as are the bags at my local PetSmart. Turned me off of CaribSea products entirely.

So you're saying it's a great substrate for livebearers?

Apparently, at times it is contaminated with pieces that will raise your pH.
Keep a close eye on your pH until you are sure your bag is not contaminated.
