scotts topsoil for low tech planted tank?

Would it be ok to use scotts topsoil for base layer? Id be topping it off with normal black sand from pet store. The only reason I ask is because I have a few extra bags lying around. It says it uses peat moss and other organic materials. It does not seem to contain any other fertilizers or non organic stuff.

It should be fine. I've used super generic dirt before with no problems. You'll want to at least sift out any large chunks (twigs, bits of wood or bark, that kind of thing.) Better is to do at least one step of mineralization prior to use. Saturate it completely, stir it around a good bit, then pour off the water. Spread the mud on a tarp and let it dry for a while. That should clear most of any urea or ammonium salts it might contain.
