CrAzY idea

I am thinking about taking some of the black mud from a pond next to my house and heating it up to 180F for 20 minutes. That will be sufficient pasturization unites to sanatize the mud. Then I want to mix the mud with gravel in the bottom of my aquarium. Next I will plant the aquatic plant and then cover it with clean gravel. After everything looks good I will fill the aquarium with water and hook up the filter. You guys think that will work? I will still need to cycle the aquarium though.

It will be very messy and will screw with the water chemistry. Just stick with the gravel or get a substrate at a pet store. Don't ever use mud, it will cloud the water and mess with the water chemistry.

go for it... it's been done before with success... Check out the mineralized soil thread on how to set it up.

To me black mud always stink of rotten egg but that could be solved through baking and or mineralizing.
