how deep should my substrate be?

and which is better

either seachem flourite black sand

or normal black sand with tetra plant substrate under neith it

Careful with sand depth not to smother the organic base material under it by not alllowing enough O2 exchange. I've just setup a Walstad style tank with soil substrate capped with flourite and used one inch of each. I think rule of thumb for a planted tank is 1 1/2 - 2" of sub. total.
