How high can you get on sand?

Nope, not snorting the Carib Sea yet, but I'm trying (largely without success) to design a cool layout for my next tank and it is besting me. I want the substrate to slope from back left forward and sweep to the right. It's a 20 gallon long with a rim so it isn't very tall. I would like to make the high point of the sand 5 inches or so. Is it safe to pile up that much sand or should I use something under it to take up space? If I need something, what do you recommend? Styrofoam?

I'd appreciate your insight!

It is safe. It will just smooth out after awhile. Light diffuser helps hold it together and make banks.

I've used small lava rock before to beef up my mounds, sand over top. Or in my case it's usually lava rock, mts, sand. Here's a pic.
