substrate turning brown?

I have some substrate i bought that is a dark gray color. I just recently took out all of the dirt, about a month and a half ago and moved the tank and put it all back in. Been running the tank for almost a month now and the gray dirt is starting to form big brown spots. If you want me to post pics later i can but has anyone ever experienced this and do you know what it is?

There are no fish in this tank and there are only a few plants.

Sounds like diatoms, they go away with time and are a normal part of a newly setup tank.

Diatoms. Once your tank matures, it should go away otto cats can help eliminate it but its up to you to buy it;ottos love to eat diatoms and algae and they are such great small catfish suitable for most tanks. They like to hang on leaves, pretty cool little guys besides their ability eating algae

I have two ottos right now but there are no fish in this newly established tank at the moment. They are pretty fun little fish though.
