TetraPlant Complete and gravel

I am looking into TetraPlant Complete. The instructions say that it should be used at the bottom of the tank and then to cover it with aquarium gravel on top. I'm a bit worried that mixing gravel to it will not look aesthetically correct. What are your opinions? Do you use something else instead of gravel or do you like how it comes?

I am using it in my newly setup 55gal, i have it covered with black gravel that is about 3mm in diameter and parts of it covered with PFS.

I guess you can cover it with whatever you want, but ive allways been told that you HAVE to put substrate over the top of it at least half an inch thick.
