what to use?

I want to change the substrate in my tank, but don't know what to use. I want thinking some sand but just read it's not the best...I was told having a little bit of sand is good. I want something affordable but pretty, preferably dark.

What do you use and why? Would you recommend it, and if not, what would you recommend?

I like eco complete because it has lots of minerals and it is great if you want plants. Not messy at all either. Very dark too.
Flourite is another choice that comes in dark, regular, and sand. Great for plants too.

If you don't want plants, just go for something like tahitian black moon sand from caribsea.

I just switched from sand to Schultz's Aquatic Potting Soil. It's a reddish brown color when wet. It's not very dense so it's a little difficult to anchor plants is you have finned bulldozers.

I have a 'Chinese Algae Eater' and five catfish. I want something that's good for the plants and looks nice and dark.
