Peat Base

I bought a bag of Laguna Peat granules to use as a base under 3 bags of eco in a 29H I am kinda paranoid of using it. A friend of mine told me to use that, and that it would not stain my water. Stained water from a piece of driftwood is what caused me to tear my tank down last time. I am trying my hand with the wood again, but it has been boiled. (note: wasnt boiled until no tannins leeched, but the wood looks signifigantly lighter, and the water seemed to get lighter each time I changed it) My friend told me that with the eco over top of it that it wont stain my water. I am expecting a bit of tannin from the wood, and am going to combat that by loading every compartment of my fluval 405 with carbon, and letting it run till the brown goes away before even adding plants or cycling the tank with fish. But I need to know if this peat will defeat my purpose with the wood? Not trying to undermine his advice, I just hate that brown water look, some like it, but its not for me.

I would stay away if you don't want the brown water look, at somepoint it may leach.

Well, I have no answer as I have the same question. I found once like one lb box of peat granules for Fluval filters for $1 at petsmart and am thinking sprinle it on base of 4 ft new tank under Powersand and ASAII. The concern I have is about low pH than water coloration.

I don't have eco-complete, I have Fluorite. I did not use granules but put down a layer of Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, about 1/2 inch under the Fluorite. By the time the dust from the fluorite settled out, any brown from the peat was gone. That has been my experience in the peat/substrate area.

You won't/ shouldn't need peat with ASAII as it will lower your ph to something like 6.5-7.0

Craig
That's my concern but realistically, how much is there acids/chemical transfer from the bottom of the substrate to the water column ? I would say negligible.

I would not use the peat. You are going to have tannis in the water within a short period of time. At some point it will stop but its going to be a long time.

I have tried Tom Barr's method for a low tech set up with 1" of peat below the substrate, and also with Diamond Black (leonardite) under the substrate. Both methods turned my water yellow.
