Unfortunately, you're gonna want to lose the undergravel filter for a planted tank... Get yourself a canister filter Also a little unclear on your wording, "a rather large bag of amazonia/power s sand". Those are 2 different products... Did you order both?
What size is the tank, and how much light is going on it? CO2? Those are the factors that will decide if you can grow carpet plants, especially in a tall tank like that...

I'd say a Filstar XP3... They're on sale @

You might need more lighting with 24" of depth... As far as CO2 goes, it's best to have everything together and ready to go all at once. With a rich substrate like Aquasoil, and relatively high light, you're going to need CO2 to help stave off an algae outbreak.

I know what it's like to want to just get set up, but believe me when I say you'll be better off with all the pieces in place. It's nice when things work the way they're supposed to

I was looking at ehiem 2215 as a filter..
so far i gather for c02 i need a tank, a regulator and a diffuser..
what size light would you reccomend?
and also should i get any kind of dry bacteria for my substrate?

You may consider also Eheim ECCO 2236 for easier maintenance, it comes with lot of media;

The Tek from http://www.seedsetc.com/ Phone: 360-659-6889 may be a good choice, or less expensive

AS for your CO2 question, check

I ordered the light off ebay(seemed like a steal)
and at 45 gallons that puts me well over 3wpg..
I guess at first i should only use 2 of the bulbs and go from there..i guess while i wait till i get the rest of my gear purchased(C02 and rest of the amazonia) ill get some quasi easy plants to learn ferts and stuff on with my new light..

kind of nice knowing is hould have all i need soon enough to have a jungle growing :-)
