Organic Materials for Lower Substrate (lava rock)

i'm preparing to set up a 29-gal. i'll be using lava rock mixed with laterite and peat moss for the bottom substrate layer, but i'm not sure how much peat moss to use.

does anyone have any experience with enriching lava rock with peat moss? suggestions for ratio?

Generally, people suggest a light sprinkling of peat on the bottom, not even covering the glass completely. I've used (much) more than that under sand, but I didn't know what I was doing when I did, and that tank didn't last long either.

Welcome to TPT!

Yes, just a very light sprinkling. More will really bring down your pH plus leech tannins into the water.

I'd go light with the peat myself although I have a lower light 10g that's pretty much a catch all/grow out type tank for now that has over an inch of peat covered with sand that's been doing fine for 6-8months. (the peat was presoaked for a month or two beforehand)

Some great reads:

This months edition of AquaScapingWorld has a great article on mineralized soil as a lower substrate. (I plan to try this one myself)

The Barr Report has a classic thread on Non Co2 Methods discussing subtrate and dosing ideas.

The El Natural has great information on using Diana Walstads' ideas.
