So, how DO you know....

when your substrate is bad and needs replacement? I have been pouring over this board and using the search engine with no luck. I have caught little snippets of "gee substrate needs replacement", but how do you know? How long is the typical lifespan of your average substrate? What does it look like when it goes bad? Does it just go to powder? Can I end another sentence with a question mark? Maybe two??

I notice the dead fish smell which means that its not going to be good. I believe its bad bacteria that causes the smell.

I think most hobbyists probably tire of the setup and break things down to start all over long before their substrate has even had a chance to "go bad." Different substrates will have different times- turning to mush would probably make me want to replace mine, though I've never had that happen?

Indeed, unless it has physically deteriorated in a noticeable manner, there isn't any need to replace it.
