They'll vehemently deny it to the point of atrocious hostility, but yep... it's for all intents and purposes SMS. The sad thing is that SMS has been discontinued, so it's much more difficult to find it. My localish Lescos never stocked it to begin with.

Turface replaced SMS, and you can now get that from www.Lesco.com. Some Lescos still also carry SMS. You can also ask for it in the forum; since you have to buy it in bulk 50lb bags lots of times ppl have extra left over.

I personally tried to get Aquariumplants.com to email me the nutrient content of their substrate but they completely dodged the question; just told me that they "guarantee results" as long as I also purchase their root tabs.

Here's the positives and negatives that I'm aware of so far with SMS and Turface (I've never personally used either, so this is just from my personal research as well as reports across a few forums):

Positives:

-cheap
-good CEC (means it will absorb and hold fertilizers for the plants)
-several colors to choose from
-avoids compaction so is good for promoting root growth, helps avoid buildup of toxic hydrogen sulfide pockets

Negatives:

-very light; can be a pain to get plants to stay down at first and clouds the water every time it's moved around
-some ppl don't like the colors
-is inert so doesn't provide any nutrient benefit on its own

What's your budget?

I personally am going with 100lbs of Fluorite black + Fluorite black sand, mixed with 50lb of Colorquartz (cost-saving measure) + a bottom layer of peat mixed with established tank mulm and Laterite; total cost about $150 for my 90gal.

If cost is no issue then go with ADA Aquasoil.

I've heard that, but wasn't sure about that one? And I suppose that could be a +ve or a -ve depending on a person's water and goals...

Very true. I have used every substrate there is. SMS and AP is the same, both will rob your KH and I think newer people tend to overlook stuff like this.
I still like SMS though

I didn't select the same one. Didn't actually put it in my cart either, so that may have been another difference. IMO still a good deal at less than $0.50/lb for substrate, though.
