How much Eco-Complete?

Hello all --

I've been lurking awhile now, but it's time for my first post as I go from research to execution. I'm setting up a 55 gallon and have decided on Eco-Complete as the substrate of choice. Couple of questions --

1) How much Eco-complete is needed for adequate depth in a 55 gal? I plan on doing a fair amount of terracing and sloping.

2) Since I'll be mail ordering the stuff (no LFS carries it), could I mix it with another substrate to lower the price? If so, what should it be mixed with and in what quantity or ratio would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

1 lb per gallon should get you about 2" high in a standard 55gal tank. Comes in 20lb bags, so I'd get 3 bags.

If you'd like to mix it with something to cut down costs, I'm mixing mine with Colorquartz. You can get colorquartz from a local pool supply company for about $25 for a 50lb bag. Go to www.3M.com to find a local distributor.

I wouldn't mix Eco with SMS, personally.

On a side note, I'm strongly considering switching out my own unopened bags of Eco for black Fluorite; CaribSea seems to have been having some quality assurance issues lately and it's not all coming out a nice uniform black like it used to?
