sand and gravel mix???

i have a community aquarium with some live plants. i want to add sand to my gravel and mix it together because i think it might look nicer. will this work? will it turn out bad? will the fish eat it? how will i clean it? should i just get a smaller grain aquarium gravel? thanks.

You can mix it if you like. It's largely a matter of personal preference. Finer substrates do make it easier to plant and encourage root growth, however.

I personally prefer substrates that will help provide nutrients for plants, like AquaSoil (expensive), Fluorite or Eco Complete (usually around $20 for a 20lb bag).

No matter what substrate you use, though, you will need to fertilize the plants.

I would consider the fish involved, some like to dig or bury themselves in the substrate. I would also think that sand may settle to the bottom if you disturb it. My gravel was called river gravel at my LFS, it has smooth rock pieces from 1/4 inch to maybe 1/16. Sand in my tank would find its way to the bottom eventually.
