is a #5 gravel good for substrate?

do i need to add undergravel filter?

the pants i'm planning to put are low lights one, like dwarf vallesneria.

Don' t use a undergravel filter for a planted tank. I am not familiar with #5 gravel.

Plain gravel can be done but would make it more difficult than something like Eco-Complete or Flourite. There are mixes for DIY gravel if you are trying to get something less expensive.

Do you mean #5 Blasting Sand? If so I heard it works well. I've not used it. "Dirt" cheap at Home Depot. A friend of mine uses it to cap a laterite mix.
