How to keep rocks from turning brown?

After awhile on my other rocks im not sure what they were but they were on the light side in color and they got brown. I tossed those out since i re-scaped the tank and got pagodas and i was wondering in case they turn a different color (even if they do have a rust color to it) what can i do to keep them they way they look now? Thanks

Well several issues come to mind-

The rocks might have turned brown b/c they were not safe to go in an aquarium in the first place- they may have oxidized.

They also may have turned brown due to brown algae. Oto cats are one of the few critters that will eat diatomacious (brown) algae.

Or they may have turned brown from a bacteria slime that is common when fish in a tank are overfed.

So my recommendations would be 1- make sure your rocks are aquarium-safe, 2- identify if there is something growing on the rocks and correct the problem.
