3g Eclipse Needs Substrate

I have a 3g eclipse that will soon become a low light planted aquarium. But I'm wondering what substrate I should use. I would really love to put Flourite in the tank, but spending $25 for a 15 pound bag for a 3g seems a little extreme (on my wallet in particular). Does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any good substrates that I can find at my local Petsmart or LFS that I can get in smaller quantities? Or am I stuck getting a 15lb bag?

How about Schultz Aquatic Soil?? You can get a 5Kg bag at Lowe's, ACE Hardware, Home Depot, etc., for $7.00 or less. IME, it grows plants as well as Fluorite, but is a lot lighter. You may have to mix some pea size gravel with it to weight it down and ensure that fine rooted stem plants remain anchored. I tested Schultz Aquatic Soil in a 2.5 gallon planted tank - no problems.

Thank you, Homer! I was thinking about going the soil route since this is a small low light tank, but I was unaware that there were any actually aquatic soils. That may very well be the way I go!

The Lowe's and Wal-Mart by my house didn't have Schultz Aquatic Soil. The Wal-Mart looked like they would as they carried all kinds of Schultz soils. Anyway, on my way home I stopped by the LFS and they sold me a bag of Fluorite for 20. So, I'm happy. I'll just have plenty left over!

Just make sure you rinse it out really, really, really (did I say really? I mean really!) well before using it- it can get really messy!

Agreed. Take a look at Rex's method for washing Flourite. http://www.rexgrigg.com/substrate.htm It works great. Then use the flourite bag to cover the flourite and fill slowly. Take a look at my 20g link below if you want to see what I mean
