Mixing sand with something else as substrate?

I really don't want to dirt my tank, but I want similar growth to a dirted tank. I have an 80lb bag of PFS to use in my 50g tank and I was thinking of mixing it with something that has CEC to get the best of both worlds since I want to be able to have carpet plants and fluorite is too big/too expensive to fill the tank with. I have 15lbs of red fluorite right now, but I feel that would look odd mixed with sand. I was thinking maybe kitty litter since it is generally grey? Since kitty litter is just clay wouldn't it be the same as fluorite, maybe safe t sorb instead? Eco complete is not an option sadly...
I want the tank to be heavily planted. Any other suggestions or comments?
