Eco-Complete Grain Size

I was wondering... given that EC is extremely varied in its grain size, would it be a bad idea to take a mallet or hammer and smash up the larger grains? Not turn the stuff to dust, but just crack the largest pieces in half? I think Id just like a more consistant grain size.

Any input or experience?

other than picking out the large >1cm stones by hand,
I would just live with the variety of grain sizes from EC.

I think it would be a bit of effort to smash them up. I do know that they're hard enough to scratch glass, I got some small particles stuck in a mag float and didn't notice, now there are some fine scratches on the front window of my tank.

How much smaller do you want it? I just replaced normal gravel with EC in one of my 10 gals and it's perfect for my carpet plants (normal and dwarf baby tears as well as clover). The biggest grains are smaller than the normal gravel pieces of my previous set up. Instead of using a hammer, why don't you get a pill crusher. They have them at drug stores (and wal-mart) for about $5, I use one to crush up larger pellets into powder for fry. It does rather well, however, I don't know exactly how it will do against rock...
