While you will have many different opinions i would avoid discus in a 45g tank. Discus are a schooling fish and grow quite large. I am starting my 75g now which i would only dare put in 5. In a smaller tank they will become stressed and the bioload would require alot of work to maintain your water chemistry. Check out simplydiscus.com as they have been a constant resource for me. Im new to planted aquariums but have raised discus in the past so i am unable to address your planted questions but good luck!!
