New substrate ideas

Hey guys im re doing my tank to go for a much more natural look. At the moment I have black gravel I love it no problems but I really want something more natural. I also want something dark so it doesn't show fish poo as much. I want some sort of sand possibly a dark brown sand or a black sand. Does anyone have any links to some good sand substrates ?? xox

I would recommend some http://www.amazon.com/Flourite-Black-Sand-15-4-lbs/dp/B0018CLX3C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1393268803&sr=8-3&keywords=seachem+flourite on top of either some more http://www.amazon.com/CaribSea-Eco-Complete-20-Pound-Planted-Aquarium/dp/B0002DH0QM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393269011&sr=8-1&keywords=eco+complete or FLoramax as it helps for planted growth, but you can use the fluorite all by itself. If you a really adamant on no planted stuff and just want black sand, carbisea makes some http://www.amazon.com/Super-Naturals-Tahitian-Moon-Aquarium/dp/B0011ZYH9S/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1393269070&sr=8-6&keywords=caribsea+sand.

This is my personal opinion of course!

I'd go with eco complete, it's very good with not showing poo and I think it looks nice personally. I have used it with root tabs and as a cap for soil with good results. My black sand still shows poo pretty easy since it just sits on top, easy to clean though if it wasn't a shrimp tank.

Eventually all substrate fizzes out, but eco complete definitely is a better all round substrate imo and highly recommended. But yes, fluorite + root tabs would be fine assuming you pick the right plants and all variables are good (lighting type, photoperiod, liq carbon, fertilizer, etc, etc)

I would go with ActivFlora over eco...I have eco in my tanks that are 2 years old and they have become kind of annoying to plant stems in. Also, check out this thread. Makes me want to try ActivFlora next. No matter what you go with, Activ or Eco, you should use root tabs or MGOPS.

Flourite "dark" is a dark brown color, and I think it looks good in the tank. As I recall the grain size is a little smaller than regular fluorite, but not nearly as small as flourite sand. If you can find it, see if the color is what you would like.

It is best to assume Flourite of any color is totally inert, so plants don't get any nutrients from it. That means you need to dose the water, and, preferably, use substrate tabs as well as dosing the water.
