substrate question - confused!

I thought I had done enough reading as a newbie so that I wouldn't make any grave mistakes but I just realized the substrate I ordered, "CaribSea Tahitian Moon Substrate" is not a great substrate for fresh water, aquatic plants. Can I use it on top of another substrate and if so, is there one someone can recommend? Is the issue that it is too finely granulated to secure roots properly?
My interest is only in creating an aquascape; I will not be housing any fish other than maybe a ghost shrimp or two.

yes you can use it to top another substrate. you have lots to choose from. I have been using worm casting from wiggle worm about 1/2 and capping it with inert sand like your moon sand and like it. others use miracle grow organic potting mix but i found that to have lots of bubbles which i didn't like although it didn't hurt anything. check the substrate sticky in the substrate forum

I have the same sand in my low tech 10gal. 2" deep black moon sand.. No issues as of yet, plants grow fine for the last 6months.
