peat moss as substrate?

i have a 20g long that is home to a checkerboard cichlid (just a male right now, i'm waiting for a female to come in) 16 ember tetras, and a blue fan shrimp. i do water changes with peat moss tea. it is semi-planted with a large pea gravel substrate right now. i intended to only have crypts, java fern, anubias, and java moss. all plants that do well in low tech tanks and 3 of the 4 are epiphytes anyway. but i wanted to add a better substrate only in certain parts of the tank for the crypts.

could i put peat moss mixed with sand in the bottom, then sand on top to keep the peat from getting mucked up, then put my gravel on top of that?

why don't you just place fertilizer sticks underneath your crypts?

The fert tabs are quick and easy too, just place into the media and away you go.

i don't think you understand. i have LARGE pea gravel as substrate. it said on the bag it was 3/8" but its more like 1/2 to 3/4" its bigger than some of my fish (ember tetras) it doesn't make the best plant substrate, nor would it keep root tabs in place under the gravel instead of seeping into the water column
