I am new to planted aquariums and am reading as much as I can about them from this website. The only thing im still confused on is what exactly flourite is. Is it like regular gravel? I am going to be setting up a 10 gallon tank. My main goal is to have a few fish (not exactly sure about what kind) and a good amount of plants. I want the tank to be as natural looking as possible.

Thanks,
Brandon

Flourite is sort of a brand...just like Eco-complete...it is gravel yes, but it has the necessities for sustaining plants in it, so fertilizer is not necessary as if you were running just rock. I highly recommend you read some more of the posts on this board as there is tons of great information available. Flourite is NOT the only option. Many people prefer Eco-complete. Also many people prefer sand. some of it is asthetic, and some is just what works. I personally use flourite, and like the results. Talk to your local fish stores, as they typically know a lot about what is on the market. All of these substrate options will be available at any good fish store, and usually the employees can help you make a decision on what to use.

Flourite is basically baked-clay...the only real benefit you will recieve is high amounts of Fe(Iron) and a high CEC(ability to transport and store nutrients)...higher the better. So basically if you're looking for the perfect substrate for you, buy a bag of Eco-Complete, either locally or online(www.aquatic-store.com)-BEST prices anywhere! Eco-Complete has a great black color to accent the colors of your fish. It has "Black Water", which is Peat to biologically start the process of breaking down the fish waste, etc. to bring the nutrients to your plants...Just ask anyone on this board, and they'll tell you Eco-Complete is the way to go in any planted situation...
