I'm changing the substrate in a 37 gallon tank. There are only three fish. After I get the fish and water out, can anyone think of a reason not to use a shop vac to just suck up the old sand and substrate?

The loss of all the good gunk in the gravel is one reason I would not do it. Unless you first do a real good gravel vac to get most of it out.
