Clay balls

I am about to begin gathering materials to make some clay balls. I have the oppertunity to use pretty much any type of clay that I want. Is there any specific type of clay that I should stay away from? Are there any personal favorites out there?

Use real clay, not polymer clay i.e. synthetic. Other than that I think you are good.

In college....so no aquariums for a while.....

About clay

Any natural clay will be good.
I will choose the dark red or brown clay for their high iron content.

I was a chef, so I have tons of good recipes; kidding aside; what do you want to do with the clay balls? Will you put laterite in them, are they decorative.

Sounds like something I might want, if I knew what I wanted them for?

Mark

I was thinking of putting down a thin layer of peat, then spreading small (1/2") clay balls every 6 inches or so. On top of that would be sand. Trying to go cheap on this tank to see if I can get some of the results I have seen others get with inexpensive DIY setups.

Did you say "inexpensive"?

Walstad style might be for you. Give it a look.

Very interesting. Maybe I will have to set up another tank going all "El Natural". Thanks for the info!
